Latest Window Trends 2026

To see the latest trends in window, door and facade construction, a visit to the bi-yearly Fensterbau Expo in Nuremberg, Germany is a must for window makers. Over 1000 exhibitors from more than 47 countries attracted around 75,000 visitors coming from 117 different countries, including from Australia. 

Study Tour 

This year AGWA (Australian Glass and Windows Association) organised a 9-day Industry Study Tour. 15 people from Australia and New Zealand took part in the tour which not only visited the Expo for several days but also some window and hardware manufacturers in Germany.

Fensterbau Expo

The 2026 Fensterbau event impressively demonstrated the importance of face-to-face interaction and hands-on technology for an industry amid transformation. Packed halls at the Nuremberg Exhibition Centre, impressive stands, in-depth discussions and a top-class supporting programmes characterised the event throughout all four days.

Home Automation 

High-quality locking and access control systems develop new possibilities to perfectly combine security with convenience. These automation systems are designed to improve comfort and accessibility across modern residential and commercial applications. From automated windows and sliding doors to smart locks and digital access solutions for entrance doors, the available ranges support intelligent building operation, modern architectural integration and reliable day-to-day performance.

Climate Adaptation

A new stage at Fensterbau focused especially on energy-efficient refurbishment, climate adaptation, the circular economy and digital planning processes. A special exhibition provided practical insights into sustainable construction methods and climate-resilient solutions.

Current or future climate change impacts can involve a changed rain pattern which may lead to water entering buildings. To counteract possibly resulting water damage, attention has to be given to drainage, especially for entrance doors. A variety of drainage solutions for hinged, French and sliding doors was a very interesting part of door stands at the expo.

Entrance Doors

Outstanding amid a range of very interesting exhibition stands was the future of doors, providing a compelling demonstration of how aesthetics, functionality and innovation can be combined in modern door solutions. 

Thresholds for Level Access

No-step or zero thresholds (magnetic) are perfect for connecting internal living spaces with outdoor entertaining seamlessly without a step. Such thresholds allow also for living independently longer by taking away trip hazards, and easing navigating with a wheelchair or walker by removing the physical hurdle of a doorstep. In Australia, the new NCC (National Construction Code) requires at least 1 access/entry point/door of every building to provide level access.

Entrance doors are also included in automation systems and wireless technology with communication between smart home devises which combine outstanding functionality with user-friendly operation.
